110. Gurney, Joseph John (1788-1847).

Notes on a Visit made to some of the Prisons in Scotland and the North of England, in Company with Elizabeth Fry; with some General Observations on the Subject of Prison Discipline. Edinburgh: Printed for Arc hibald Constable and Co. / London: Longman, Hurst, Rees [etc.], 1819. 1st Edition. viii+170pp. + rear blank. 12mo. Nicely rebound in late 20th century calf-backed blue boards with gilt-stamped spine. Title-page foxed and dusty, a few inconsequential marg inal tears, a nice, untrimmed copy in a modern binding. Also published serially 1819-1820 in The Pamphleteer Volumes 15 & 16. An important Quaker humanitarian reformer of the early 19th century, Gurney wrote about prison reform and took part in the anti-slavery movement with Clarkson, Wilberforce, and Buxton, touring the U.S. and Canada on behalf of abolition. His first published work on reform was his 1819 Notes on a Visit made to some of the Prisons in Scotland and the North of Engl and, in Company with Elizabeth Fry. Gurney and his sister Elizabeth (Gurney) Fry (1780-1846) -- herself a notable social reformer -- made their tour in 1818, reporting in some detail on many of the prisons. The latter part of the book deals with i ssues of food & clothing, discipline, employment, instruction, and visiting committees.
