Beccaria applied a utilitarian test to crimes and punishments, constructing a scale of crimes according to the extent of social evil they produced and calibrating punishments to crimes so that for any g iven crime the pain of punishment minimally exceeded the pleasure produced from the crime.

The fullest account of one of the most sensational American murder trials. Both pe rpetrator and victim were on the Harvard faculty. Before he was hanged, Webster confessed to murdering and dismembering Parkman. Contains Oliver Wendell Holmes's testimony (his office was just above Webster's). Unprinted spine hand-let tered. Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of Vienna, Benedikt make numerous discoveries in electrotherapeutics and neuropathology; Ellenberger thought that his notion of the "pathogenic secret" in hysteria directly prefigured and inf luenced Breuer & Freud, who footnoted him in their 1892 paper. Charcot named a rare neuromuscular syndrome after him after he correctly described it (tegmental mesencephalic paralysis). Along with Lombroso, Benedikt also pioneered the study of criminal a nthropology. In the present book, which was influential in its time, he tried to localize morality in the brain and to show that the brains of criminals differed in anatomical structure from those of normals. Professor of Nervous and Mental Diseases at the Royal University of Naples, Bianchi was the most prominent early 20th century Italian neuropsychiatrist.
