An enormously influential book which went into many editions and paved the way for acceptance of Freud's notion of the unconscious. Hartmann reasoned that there were three levels of unconscious: the absolute, which was the substance of the un iverse; the physiological, which was the basis for all organic life; and the relative, or psychological, from which conscious mental processes and behavioral patterns developed. His conception of the unconscious is actually more Groddeckian than Freudian (it was from Groddeck that Freud borrowed the concept of Das Es for the structural unconscious in his last model of the mind).
